Calls are free from landlines and mobiles.

The Out of Hours service is provided by East of England Ambulance Service, NHS 111 and Care UK and commissioned by NHS England. You can contact the Out of Hours services between the following times:-

Monday to Friday  6.30pm –  8.00am.     Friday 6.30pm  to Monday 8.00am.

Visit a pharmacy for healthcare advice without an appointment

Your local pharmacist is able to help with minor cuts, sprains, aches and pains, colds and flu, headaches, rashes, cystitis, emergency contraceptive (most pharmacies now offer this service) and other common conditions.

No appointment is necessary and your local pharmacist is open late, is available at weekends and many public holidays.

Pregnancy: Worried or Need Advice ?

Out of hours and in the event of an emergency please contact Eastwood ward on 01702 385077. 

If heavily bleeding please attend your nearest Accident and Emergency Department!

The early pregnancy unit is located on Eastwood Ward on the second floor of the Cardigan wing.

This unit aims to provide a dedicated service for women up to 17 weeks pregnant that are experiencing pain or bleeding, or have previously experienced problems in early pregnancy.

Women over 17 weeks pregnant should contact MB1 on 01702 385486.

This is not a walk in service, we operate an appointment system only.

Our opening hours are:

Monday to Friday – 07:45 – 15:45

Sunday 08:00 – 12:00 midday

There are many health benefits for you and your baby if you access maternity care as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test.

Mental Health Services available in Southend

EPUT (Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust)

EPUT work with a range of organisations to deliver mental health services to support people in their own homes and from a range of hospital and community-based premises.

Southend Community Mental Health Team

Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT’s) provide mental health care and treatment if you have more complex mental health needs.

For our out of hours and weekend Crisis Support Service, please call the general NELFT switchboard on 0300 555 1201 to be put through to immediate Crisis Support help.

Get immediate help for minor injuries

Use your local minor injuries unit if you need medical treatment or advice which does not need a visit to A&E or a medical appointment.

Some examples of problems they deal with:

  • sprains and strains
  • suspected broken limbs
  • minor head injuries
  • cuts and grazes
  • bites and stings
  • minor scalds and burns
  • ear and throat infections
  • skin infections and rashes
  • eye problems
  • coughs and colds
  • feverish illness in adults
  • feverish illness in children
  • abdominal pain
  • vomiting and diarrhoea
  • emergency contraception

Have you tried self-care?

A range of common illnesses such as cold and flu and minor injuries can be treated at home simply by combining a well-stocked medicine cabinet with plenty of rest.

Examples of the ailments best treated by yourself are:

  • Grazed knee

Arrange an appointment with the Practice Nurse

The Practice Nurse is usually able to assess the situation and in some cases will organise initial blood tests and other investigations prior to arranging a follow up appointment with your doctor.

The Practice Nurse complements the service that we offer to you, our patients. Please be assured that a doctor’s appointment will always be available should you prefer but you may get an earlier appointment if you opt to consult the nurse practitioners.

See a Nurse about: blood pressure checks, urine infection, cervical smears, dressings, family planning advice, contraceptives, immunisations, diabetes management, asthma care, COPD (heart) care, smoking cessation, free health checks for 40-70 year olds, travel advice, removal of stitches and clips etc.
